Have you ever done something on the fly, on a whim or just out of the blue that ended up having an interesting outcome? It probably happens more than we think, but I wonder if we always realize it at the time or even at all. In 2007 I was fortunate to travel with friends to Ireland and we spent ten days driving around that beautiful country, having an wonderful time. There were many amazing things about that trip – like getting lost multiple times, having not one but two tires blow out on our rental, meeting a dog that would fetch rocks, happening upon a rally car race by accident…the list goes on.
One thing that was a “on a whim moment” was when I snapped a picture of this sign in Limerick. We never visited Limerick, other than to drive through on our way to Athlone after landing in Shannon. While sitting in traffic at a light I saw this really cool sign on the wall of a building. I quickly rolled down the window and just pointed my camera in the direction of the sign and pressed the shutter.

The light changed and off we went. Later that night in our room I looked at the image on the tiny screen of the camera and was excited that it looked like the one shot I took, the only opportunity I had to get that image worked. We saw lots of other great vintage Guinness signs on our trip, but never another one like this. And, what is interesting is that this image is one of my most popular sellers.
It even was enhanced I think with the neon Late Night sign. I could not begin to tell you what that sign was for, I never even noticed it when I rolled down the window to get that shot of the Guinness sign. And this one shot is really the only thing I remember about Limerick, since we just were driving through and never visited.
Isn’t it amazing how some of those little split second decisions turn out? I am glad I took a chance on getting that shot. It’s not a perfect image but it sure is a fun memory for me of a far away place and evidently, it’s a fun image for others as well. Thanks to everyone that is enjoying this image in their home or business right now with me. I appreciate your support of my “on the fly” move!
