Yesterday afternoon we arrived home from our trip to Pittsburgh to visit with Keith’s family. While unpacking and taking things to and from the car, I noticed that the fall stockpiling had begun. I grabbed my phone and snapped a few pictures of the scene that I found.
We have a black walnut tree in our yard. Yes, that is a black walnut, not a tennis ball. As I continued following, I found more.
They were hidden under leaves. They were laying in the grass.
Someone had started to dig this one out of the green protective shell.
And this one was just lying in the middle of the path. But I had to laugh when I looked over at our ladder that is hung on our fence.
Neatly perched at the end of the ladder was a black walnut, some three feet up off the ground. And considering that the black walnut tree is clear on the other side of the yard, you know this little green gem did not just fall from the tree and land there on its own.
We never have any black walnuts to use, not that I would, they are not one of my favorites, but at least they never go to waste. Every Fall, like clockwork, the squirrels make sure that they are stockpiled for the winter. And they never cease to amaze us at the places they leave them.
