The bleeding hearts are blooming! I love these old fashioned flowers. They don’t hang around for long, so I am always happy when I have a chance to get some pictures of them while they are in bloom in the garden.
They have some funny names like Dutchman’s Breeches or Lady in a Bath. They are mostly pink, but sometimes you can find white ones. We have white, but they are not blooming yet. They normally bloom later than the pink.
If you look at the blooms on the far right, you can see how they really look like a heart before they open up. To me they look like a heart with a tear drop before they open. I wonder why they were never called crying hearts? Maybe some day they will be, since it seems it takes a while for the nicknames to take hold. For now at least, I will enjoy them as my springtime bleeding hearts.
