Many times here on the blog I have shared with you stories and pictures of our abundant deer population. Living in town, we never really expected to have so many large four legged visitors living in our backyard. And every year we seem to have babies born in and around our yard without fail. They are adorable, just as all animal babies are, and this year’s baby is no different.
Keith first sent me a picture of the baby a little over a week ago, I think. We saw the baby several times before I was able to capture a picture of it with Momma, above, on Saturday. As quick as I saw them they disappeared into the jungle, um, our overgrown backyard.
But last night I was able to catch the little spitfire running and jumping and playing while Momma chowed down in the garden.
Now these pictures are not great. It was overcast, we had a storm coming in and I was up on the hill inside the house shooting from behind the glass panes of our windows.
But this little tyke was exploring and having a ball while Momma ate dinner.
It would run from one side to the other.
And it would jump and kick up it’s heels.
At one point I wondered if it was as keen as its Momma. It was as if it saw me way up on the hill taking its picture!
But then it went back to running around.
And finally, after playing was done, it headed over to Momma’s side.
And then the surprise came. See the arrow on the right above? See that patch of brown in the jungle of green?
It was ANOTHER baby! Evidently it had been laying in the brush behind the compost pile the entire time.
And now that Momma was here, it was time for them to have dinner.
Soon they both were nursing as Momma munched away.
It was very sweet to watch the little family together.
I really was startled that there were two babies this year.
Who knows, maybe we were seeing them both all along, just one at a time. I wonder if soon we will see both of them together all the time?
They sure are sweet. And I really am glad I got to see them both last night. No wonder Momma has been so busy munching when we see her. She’s got double duty this year.
