Last December Keith had the opportunity to play Santa’s Helper. The Commonwealth’s Attorney has an annual Christmas party and his normal Santa’s Helper could not attend this year, so at the last minute Keith was tapped to help out.
When he told me about it, he started by asking me, “are we doing anything this Saturday?” I was thinking “Oh, no, what are we gonna have to do?” When I told him no, he then told me how he got “volunteered” to play Santa’s Helper. I told him he couldn’t, as we did not have a suit and I wasn’t sure he knew all of his Santa facts. He said they were going to provide him with a suit and we would work on the facts. Did I mention this was Friday? The Friday before the Saturday?
Well, luckily Keith decided to put on the suit early Saturday while we went over the names of all the reindeer and other such important details. And the suit, this was the real deal. Almost as nice as what Santa wears, I can assure you. But, there was one problem. There wasn’t a beard! In a panic, Keith called and found out that they would make sure the beard was available. Of course, the deal was done, he had to be Santa’s Helper now.
So, we continued getting him dressed, and yes, he did use padding. When we finally got everything together, we then had another challenge. There were two sets of big jingle bells. Where did they go? We tried his boots, nope, not there. Around his arms? Nope, that wouldn’t work either. We just could not figure it out.
We headed outside for some pictures before he had to leave and luckily our neighbor Brandon knew exactly what to do with those big jingle bells. “Santa has to jingle when he walks,” he said so we attached them to his belt, one on each side. And, sure enough, Santa’s Helper now jingled when he walked. Whew! Would have hated to not have that right for the kids at the party.
Keith went to the party after meeting up with his ride at the courthouse and being provided a beard. Unfortunately, I did not get to go, so no pictures of the full outfit. I asked him how he did and he said he was able to answer all of the kid’s questions, and they asked plenty. He said it was easy, it all just came to him.
He was an awesome helper I am sure and did the real Santa proud!
