A while back I shared about my vision for making over my craft room. I had been pinning ideas for when I finally had the ability to redo my crafty space. Well, last month Keith and I were able to do that (I am still waiting on two key pieces to be finished) and it is amazing how much easier it is to be creative in a space designed for that purpose.
I shared this photo a few weeks ago as we were wrapping up the major work that we had done ourselves. I have always wanted to have a dress form ( I would love one like one of these vintage ones) to display my jewelry on for photo purposes and to make sure that the pieces lay right and work the way I intend them to.
I haven’t come across any of the vintage ones that I could afford but Keith found this one for me on eBay {affiliate link} and I could not be more thrilled! It was very affordable and works perfectly for what I need it to do – function as a photo prop/display and allow me to view my jewelry as it should look on a person!
And, another thing about my craft room is the fact that I finally have a place indoors where I can take pictures without having to spend a ton of time editing them in Photoshop afterwards! We painted the walls a light robins egg blue color that is bright and cheery. Our house is surrounded by huge trees which provides tons of shade and not a lot of natural lighting options for indoor photography.
And I used a lot of antique cupboards that we already owned for storage in the room, and this white one with bead board doors makes a good backdrop for taking pictures. I don’t have a proper studio set up but with the cupboard as a backdrop, a few extra lights that I hook up and my camera and tripod, I have already been able to take product photos to put on my Etsy shop.
And I was able to re-photograph some of my older pieces, like these two turquoise necklaces. They did not have photographs showing how they would look on a human looking form, just those little jewelry forms you get at the craft store, or they were just laid out and photographed. I think it is much easier to tell how a necklace will look when you can see where it falls on a human form and how it drapes.
And I also photographed some new pieces that I added to my shop, like this iridescent copper cottonwood leaf necklace. I love these real leaves that are dipped in precious metals. They are really knockout pieces to wear!
And since my room is organized it is so much easier to create! This weekend I made quite a few new pieces to get ready for a show I am going to do in November – just in time for the holidays!
I can even get some decent photos just using my phone, like these last three pictures. I had fun creating some pieces that can be worn together in layers. It’s easy to see how they look together and I was able to make adjustments prior to finishing them just by trying them on the dress form first. That makes me really happy.
I also dug out this ironstone platter that I found last year at a yard sale to use as a staging area for pieces. It may also be another prop I use to photograph pieces.
All I can say is that my craft room now truly is a creative space. I am very happy with how it is turning out and how productive I can be. It’s not a cluttered eyesore any more. Now it is organized, clean and not only one of my favorite places, but a favorite place of our Three Little Kittens. They have plenty of places to take a nap, hang out or snuggle next to me as I work. It truly is a happy place!
