It’s April and that means it is time to start digging in the dirt here in our part of Virginia. So that meant that last weekend Keith and I went and visited one of our favorite local nurseries, Walter’s Greenhouse in Hardy, Virginia.
And as usual, they did not disappoint! Not only did we get the herbs we wanted for our kitchen herb garden but we found tons of inspiring things to do in the garden and today I want to share them with you. They do such a great job displaying plants and accessories for your garden. I wanted to come home and start working in our yard but it was too cold so I had to wait a few days to get my herbs in the ground.
Like any good nursery, they have more than just plants. They have tons of yard art and accessories for your garden. Keith liked this little Flamingo made from metal and a big rock.
I liked this little bunny rabbit.
I also liked this Rooster Planter. I don’t think that was a stone planter but I also liked the crackle finish.
And they still had their little army of cute insects.
I have always loved these little critters.
Just so cute! And sometimes you really have to look in the middle of the tables of plants for other little hidden treasures.
Like little twig baskets full of succulents. By the way, Walter’s specializes in herbs and succulents.
Isn’t this little Frog topiary just the cutest? Usually they have lots of larger than life topiaries but I did not notice that many this year. Or maybe I just missed them because there was so much to see!
Like these cute little moss covered purses! They started doing these a few years ago and I just love them! They also do shoes, so you could have a purse to match your shoes! These make perfect gifts for Mother’s Day!
Walter’s also will always have a nice selection of annuals that are not the usual garden fare. I think this was a type of Cosmos. I love the color combination.
This pretty is a Pink Mulla Mulla. It is from Australia. It reminds me of wild clover with it’s color. It is soft and billowy.
Can you imagine a lawn of grass with these hot pink English Daisies? They were so bright! I wish they bloomed all summer long but here they are definitely just a Springtime bloomer.
Walter’s was also one of the first nurseries around her to carry Ranunculus. I really love the color of this one. But I have never had any luck with them coming back. Here you have to dig them up and save the tubers. But they are so beautiful and come in so many amazing colors.
Their Stocks were in full bloom when we visited and they made the greenhouse smell amazing.
They had several varieties – singles and doubles and lots of pretty colors.
I love when I get a floral arrangement that has Stocks in it. Just a few can make an arrangement smell heavenly.
I fell in love with this trough of colorful ceramic Toad Stools! I wanted to take them all home.
And if you wanted a metal sculpture of Mushroom, they had those ,too!
There were also a lot of colorful glass balls sprinkled throughout the greenhouse.
And some cute little blown glass birds. There is a light yellow one above. I didn’t get any really good shots of them but they were so cute.
They also had their large hanging succulent boxes. These two had swatches of blue paint, handles and glass door knobs.
They are just loaded with every kind of succulent imagineable.
These two are a little smaller and show the different choices of design possibilities – with painted wood or just plain and rustic.
And there were planters full of succulents, showcasing the many colors, styles and textures.
This planter reminded me of an old dough bowl.
This one was a simple hypertufa trough. My friend June and I took one of their classes one year and learned how to make these. That was really fun.
This little tray of succulents reminded me of little cupcakes.
Another thing sprinkled throughout the plants were these sweet little metal signs – Dream…
Imagine…
Relax…all good things to do in a garden, don’t you think?
Something else new this year were these Treasure Chest Terrariums.
I loved how you could probably tuck everything in and close them overnight if it got too chilly and the plants needed some protection.
They really look great on a pedestal in the garden. Oh, do you notice the large metal leaves? I almost didn’t. They have had those before and I have always thought they were so cool.
Super cute!
And they had several of these Bust planters.
They bring a classical element to anyone’s garden.
I just love the succulents spilling over like locks of hair.
They also have water fountains and trellises.
And some wonderful planters. This large column planter really made a statement.
There were also lots of crystals on sticks. These add whimsy to your garden and are fun when they catch the light, adding sparkle and shine.
And they had all kinds of accessories to create your very own Fairy Garden. This tree stump planter was cute.
And they had all kinds of fairies, gnomes and miniatures.
But the giant orbs were my favorite again this year. Especially this one. The inside was painted to look like a starry nighttime sky.
The little church and fenced in Irish Moss was adorable.
This was another of the large orbs. I am not sure if that is the name these planters go by, that is just what I call them. They are large metal round balls. And they are amazing.
Well, that pretty much sums up the many inspiring things we saw at our local greenhouse this past weekend. Isn’t this Lamp Planter cute? I am sure there were other things that I missed, but these are the things that caught my eye as we walked through dreaming of the possibilities for our garden patch. I think I will be on the lookout for unusual items at yard sales and tag sales that I can use to make some cute planters with. I already have my watering can planters and silver urn, but who knows what else I could come up with? I sure got a lot of ideas and garden inspiration from my local nursery!
