I am not sure why it is called Bittersweet. All parts of this vine are poisonous, so I don’t think it would be because of it’s taste. It’s an invasive vine, maybe that’s why. I don’t really know.
What I do know is that it is simply lovely in the fall and people covet it’s use in fall decorations. People get very secretive in these parts when it comes to revealing their stash or source. And you can pay a premium price at shows for fresh cut vines to take home.
Well, I think it refers to the changing of the seasons. I think the sweet, charming yellow seed pods that burst open to reveal their sweet orange seed for the birds (yes, the birds love these seeds) signals the end of fall and the beginning of the bitter winter season ahead.
