Hello, I hope you are having a great weekend! This morning Keith and I hit the yard sales and estate sales in search of Treasures! We only found two things that we brought home and when combined together they created a very neat addition to collection of Upcycled Planters! I have a collection of Watering Can Planters that I use for my caladiums and a neat old Silverplate Urn that currently has some rogue Catnip growing in it and the Three Little Kittens sure are happy about that!
I love taking something that was made for one purpose and bringing new life to it by using it for something different! Doing that keeps it from sitting around cluttering up space or worse yet going to the landfill when it still can be used.
Today I found a little pot of Hens and Chicks at a yard sale and decided to bring them home since they were practically free. I don’t know about you, but succulents are so expensive now that they seem to be such an “in” plant. I mean Hens and Chicks are one of those old fashioned plants that people used to give away because they seemed to multiply so rapidly. The real Treasure that I found today was this old silver-plate cracker tray or basket.
When I saw it I knew it would be the perfect home for my new Hens and Chicks acquisition. I love the clamshell design.
Since it had an open filigree design, I cut up some leftover coco mat (I love these for lining things that have holes) to keep the dirt from running out every time I needed to water.
And since this has the open filigree design, I don’t have to worry about these babies getting waterlogged. I just took them out of the plastic pot I bought them in and separated them and spread them out along the length of the cracker tray.
These pictures were taken just after the Hens and Chicks were transplanted and watered so they still look a little disheveled. But they will grown into their new home in no time. That’s another great thing about succulents. They are so easy to transplant and care for. Probably another reason why they are “in” right now.
I am loving my new little upcycled planter. And all together I only spent $2 total – plants included! Now, I just need to find some more little unloved serving pieces because I have more succulents of my own I can transplant!
