I want to share a few of my Instagram shots with you from a fun event I participated in yesterday morning in my hometown.
Over 15,000 people and canine friends came out to support our local Rescue Mission in their largest fundraiser of the year. It’s called the Drumstick Dash and it takes place on Thanksgiving morning. It’s a 5K race with runners, runners with dogs, runners with strollers, walkers, walkers with dogs and walkers with strollers. You get the picture.
This is the third year I have participated with my friend June and her family. We have runners, walkers, strollers and dogs in our group. The event is coordinated well. The course winds through downtown Roanoke and along the way there are musical entertainers, like this gentleman playing the bagpipes.
There were quite a few men in kilts yesterday, along with bands of all shapes and forms, string quartets, solo acts, you name it. And there were also community “cheerleaders” along the route encouraging, thanking and wishing everyone a happy Thanksgiving.
We were about middle of the pack. Here you can see the group on a bridge behind us. The way the route is laid out, there are several spots where you can see multiple sections of the different parts of the race at once, all filled with participants snaking their way to the finish.
And when you get to the finish, you are greeted by “Dash” the mascot for the event. Here is my friend June posing with Kevin Spencer, one of the many, many volunteers that make the event possible. He promotes the Dash throughout the year around our Valley.
I hope if you ever have the opportunity to participate in our Dash, you will. It is a lot of fun and helps take care of the homeless in our community. It is a great way to move our feet so others can eat!
