After our second visit to the Cathedral in Strasbourg, France, we headed back out to Place de la Cathedrale to explore some of the gift shops around the square. I was on a Viking River Cruise with my friends Betsy, Jerry and June and we were spending the day in Strasbourg, which was one of our planned excursions as we journeyed down the Rhine.
We walked across the square to Maison Kammerzell again and I took more pictures of the unique architecture of the building.
The decorative half timber construction paired with the peach colored walls really made it stand out against the other buildings in this charming old city.
This was the front section with all of the stained glass windows. There are figureheads and ornamentation all over. And look at that little door on the top floor! Maybe that allows them to move pieces of furniture in and out? There wasn’t a balcony visible, so that was the only thing that we figured made sense. I am sure it would be hard to move modern day furniture up and down the narrow stairwells inside. Of course we could be wrong, but that’s what we would do.
Below this window was a painted sign with construction dates similar to the painted sign at Maison des Tanneurs. The original building dates to 1427. It’s amazing that it has survived this long.
And it stands in the shadow of the Arrow, or the tower on the Cathedral.
Today it is a restaurant and hotel. I still think it would be a fun place to stay if you were going to spend a few days in Strasbourg.
Such a neat place to look at!
We continued down Rue des Hallebardes where I found these pretty windows. You know I love to photograph windows and doors.
And the pretty Easter displays! This was a chocolate shop called Leonidas across the street from Maison Kammerzell.
Here is another peach half timber building.
And a beautiful topiary!
Here’s another pretty window display at a china shop. What I really loved was the intricate metal flower arch framing the inside of the window.
Another view of the cute little buildings around the square. I really love the teeny little one crammed in between. And those cute little dormer windows on top.
There were a lot of visitors but it was not as busy as when we visited the Cathedral in Cologne. And there were lots of bicycles everywhere, too, just like in Amsterdam.
And just like in Cologne, there were entertainers in the square!
These mimes were interesting! This pair was on one side of the square.
And this lady was on the other side. I liked her silver pitcher for collecting tips.
These mimes were not totally still like some I have seen before. They would watch the crowd.
And even smile for those taking their pictures!
Or even wave at children passing by. All in all we really enjoyed exploring and shopping around Place de la Cathedrale. It was a beautiful day for exploring La Petite France and we still had a few more areas to see.
