On Monday we flew home from California and when we were making our descent into the Roanoke Valley, we flew directly over our famous Roanoke Star, which sits on top of Mill Mountain. You can see it in the image taken from our plane. It is about 1/3 the way up from the bottom to the left of the center. It has a spur to access it from the Blue Ridge Parkway and you can drive up the front side of the mountain to get there from the city. Both the star and the parkway are synonymous with the Roanoke Valley. The star is always a welcome sign to see when we return home from a trip. Although it looks tiny in this picture, it actually is 88.5 feet tall and at night, neon lights illuminate it on the skyline, overlooking the city. It’s a landmark that is part of our claim to fame, so to speak. I am always amazed when I have the opportunity to view our world from high in the sky.
