Every year since 2014 I have participated in an exercise started many years ago by Ali Edwards where you choose One Little Word for your focus each year, usually in January and usually in place of setting resolutions or goals. At least that is how I interpret it. That first year I chose Opportunity. And I took a lot of Opportunities that year and I posted about them all the time.
In 2015, I chose Learn. In 2016 I chose Simplify. In 2017 I chose Be and last year I chose Change. You can see more of my One Little Word Posts here, but please realize, as the years went on, I posted less about my words, even though I did let them guide me through the year. In fact last year I never even posted about my OLW, Change. And it was an appropriate word, because there was so much change happening – change at work, change in our lives, change in this blog, you name it. It was a good word for 2018.
If you follow me on Instagram, you already know my One Little Word for 2019 – it is Attitude. And I am going to focus on having a positive Attitude. I tend to always think of the negative and focusing on the positive more than negative will provide a challenge that will help me grow.
I didn’t really know until the very end of 2018 that my word would be Attitude. It came to me when I saw this quote by Vern McLellan. This quote screamed Attitude and that was all it took. I was having a conversation on PRIXM with Rhonna Farrer about her OLW and how I hadn’t picked mine yet, it hadn’t come to me. She assured me it would and lo and behold, it did. That’s the thing about each year’s One Little Words. They do come to you. Sometimes more clearly than other times but they do choose you.
There is still time for you to pick your One Little Word for 2019! I really like Ali’s thinking when she came up with this project. You definitely can learn a lot about yourself through choosing your word and acting on it throughout the year. And even if you don’t see a lot of posts here about me and my OLW, have no fear. Picking a word each year and acting on it has become a habit that I plan on keeping.
