Saturday was the annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade and Shamrock Festival in Roanoke. Morgan, Ella, June and Caroline and their Dad Mike and I went to watch the parade on a beautiful, sunny, Spring day. This was the 24th year of the parade and was by far the longest one we have ever been to…it had over 100 entries and lasted 2 hours. The girls thoroughly enjoyed it, especially all of the candy they received. It was like Halloween!
We get lucky every year and get seats right on the street so the girls can see everything going on. This year it rained the night before and we were worried it might rain during the parade, but it was sunny and in the 70’s instead. That made it extra nice for us while we watched.
The big sponsor is McDonald’s and the girls screamed when they saw Ronald McDonald. It’s amazing how long Ronald has been around. I can remember getting excited about him and the Hamburgler and the rest of that gang when I was a little girl.
Like I said at the beginning, there were over 100 entries this year and the parade lasted for 2 hours. The girls were great for the most part…Morgan was more interested in trying to run into the street, but Caroline and Ella really paid attention to what was going on this year. I took about 2000 photos, so I think I will have to have several blog entries to show the highlights of such a large event.
And every year, our parade has St. Patrick leading the way. I think it may even be the same man every year. At least he looks the same to me. This year they said the parade attracted about 15,000 spectators. I think that is amazing for our little town. I know we enjoy attending and I can sure appreciate all that must go into making something like this go off without a hitch.
How did you celebrate St. Patrick’s Day? Hope you had fun!
