Yesterday at work, my boss and I were talking and he could not really remember what exactly we celebrated when it came to Memorial Day. He knew it was a patriotic holiday and thought it was to celebrate our troops serving overseas. I told him that I thought it had more to do with remembrance of those that had served and since we both were not sure exactly, I did a little research online.
Memorial Day started as Decoration Day and was to recognize those that have died in our Nation’s Service. Neither one of us was actually correct, but I am glad that I looked it up. Many towns claim to have originated the holiday to honor and decorate the graves of the fallen, but most agree that it was a tradition that started in the South during the Civil War to honor the fallen Confederate Soldiers. That is why so many vintage images depict the decoration of graves along with men in Confederate uniforms.
It is important when we gather with family and friends this weekend and enjoy our three day holiday that we remember those that have died in the service of our country. They chose to defend the land that we live in and gave their all.
