I am so very grateful to live in a house with a garden. And I am grateful to be married to a man that loves his yard and garden so much that he makes it a place for relaxation, beauty and enjoying nature.
We live in town on a lot with lots of tall, tall oak trees. They afford us lots of shade and we have embraced that by getting rid of grass and planting a lot of natural, shade loving plants. And we made sure to have something for every season in our garden.
Right now is time for the berries, such as the beauty berry, bittersweet, barberry and dogwood. In the mornings I see the mockingbirds and bluebirds feasting on the bittersweet as I leave for work. And the tall oaks provide plenty of acorns for the chipmunks and squirrels.
Speaking of chipmunks, I was entertained the other weekend watching a chipmunk eat the seeds from one of the varieties of hostas in the front yard. These hosta send up flowers on a 2 foot or so spike and in the fall they go to seed. Well, this little chipmunk would climb up about a third of the way until the stalk would topple to the ground and he would quickly scramble to the seed pod and stuff his cheeks as fat as he possibly could. Then he would go into his hole and return with empty cheeks for more.
And, any that he missed were quickly cleaned up by Mrs. Cardinal. She just followed along behind him merrily filling her belly while he did all of the work. Now I know how and why those hostas pop up all over the yard each spring!
Yes, I am so grateful for our wonderful garden and the work Keith does to keep it up. I love the free entertainment no matter what the season is.
