Earlier this week I realized I needed a few birthday cards and I didn’t want to buy them, I wanted to make some handmade cards. I used to make all of my cards and I missed making something handmade so I decided to get into my stash to see what I could quickly come up with. This project is so easy, I didn’t take process pictures and it is perfect for using leftover scraps you have on hand. If you are like me, I hate to throw anything away, and this is the perfect project for those extra little strips you cut off from other paper crafting projects.
I started with a pack of blank kraft paper cards. Any premade card would work, it is up to you how you want your card to turn out. I found three papers that went together in my stash of scraps. These are 1″ strips trimmed off other projects that I saved because I knew I would need them some day and this was the day!
My card was 5.5″ by 4″ and I wanted it to be landscape, but portrait would also work for this type of card, you would just need more strips of paper or thicker strips to make a taller cake. Again, each strip was an inch wide, so I trimmed them down to a 5″ width, a 4.5″ width and a 4″ width. Then I used a corner rounder to round only the top corners of each piece. After that I simply glued each strip to the card using a glue stick.
I wanted a little bit of ribbon or trim to give the card dimension and found this cute little black velvet rick rack in my ribbon stash. I adhered the ribbon to the top of the bottom two layers and there you have it! Simple Birthday Cake Birthday Cards!
And the great thing about a card design like this is that cake can be used for so many other things: weddings, celebrations in general, invitations…use your imagination. All I did was add a Birthday sticker to the inside and I was ready to go. I love how the cards turned out and I loved that I could use up those saved scraps from my stash to make some beautiful handmade cards to give.
