Today I want to express my gratitude for being able to read. I cannot imagine not being able to read and write and understand written words. Not only is it a major way to communicate with others but it also opens up new worlds for us when we read a book or pick up a newspaper and find out what is going on in other parts of our country and our world.
When I was younger, some of the first books I fell in love with were by Beatrix Potter. I know, part of the love affair was with her drawings but her stories were simple and imaginative and to a little girl that loved animals, you could not get any better than Beatrix Potter. As I grew older I came to love Nancy Drew mysteries. I can remember reading an entire book in a day on many occasions. And I would read the series all the way through and then start all over again. And what about the Little House books by Laura Ingalls Wilder? Those were another bunch of favorites that could be read over and over again.
I will never forget how exited I was Nancy Drew was brought to television. I was so eager to watch the stories unfold on TV, yet so disappointed because the books were so much better. The stories were changed and one of the main characters was removed entirely. I think that is why Keith and I still read the newspaper daily. A lot of my coworkers get their news from the internet or TV and there is nothing wrong with that; Keith and I will watch TV news too, but there is something about holding the newspaper in your hands and getting all of the details, not just the headline worthy items.
I am so grateful that I can read. And I am grateful that every morning Keith and I can read the newspaper together before heading off to work. It is how we start our day, together.
