Today is the day we take time to honor those that have died in the service of our country.
Memorial Day was officially proclaimed by General John Logan, a commander of the Grand Army of the Republic on May 5, 1868. That is why on vintage Memorial Day or Decoration Day ephemera you often see the letters GAR. The holiday was first observed on May 30th of that year when flowers were placed on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery.
While you are enjoying time with your family and friends today, take a moment to honor those that gave the ultimate sacrifice for us. And if you can, visit a local cemetery and place a flag on the grave of a fallen soldier to show your appreciation for their service and sacrifice.
