I am thankful that I live in a world with art. I am thankful that I live in a town that believes in artists. I can remember in the sixth grade I went on a field trip to the Smithsonian and the National Gallery of Art. I loved seeing the works of so many famous artists in one place. My friend Cindy and I were paired up together and we were able to explore the museum on our own. It was fascinating and overwhelming, there was so much to stimulate my mind.
Of course, I never really mastered any painting or drawing skills, although my family has no shortage of talent. I remember once finding a tablet with pencil drawings of my Dads. He is very talented. I don’t think he still draws, but he uses his artistic skills in other ways. Like the dollhouse he made for me from a drawing he had, or the copper bird house he made for Keith from a picture we pulled off the internet. My mom can paint, draw, work with pastels and she takes lovely photographs. My sister paints, draws, works with mixed media, computer animation and plays musical instruments. My brother also plays musical instruments. I remember he played his clarinet at my Uncle’s funeral and it was so amazing. I am more of a crafty type artist and photographer. You can easily see why I am so grateful for art. I come from a family of talented artists. We are not famous, but we are artists none the less. And for me, crafting and photography are ways to express myself, reduce stress, share beauty and preserve memories.
I cannot imagine a world without art and I am so grateful that I was exposed to it early on in my life so that I can appreciate it now and understand the impact it has made on my life.
