A few favorite cookbooks…for those of you that have been to my house, you know this is kind of a joke. I collect cookbooks! I have two cabinets full of them right now! And I am still collecting, in fact, I picked up three just a couple of weekends ago while out yard-saling! But, maybe I can tell you about the kinds of cookbooks I collect along with my favorites.
- The Joy of Cooking – I received this when we got married, over 28 years ago. It is a go to for everything under the sun.
- A Betty Crocker Cookbook that I received when I got married
- Betty Crocker’s Dinner For Two – my mom had this one when I was growing up and I was tickled when I found a copy for myself
- Several cookbooks that my neighbor Betty gave me before she passed away – they were moving to a condo and getting rid of things in their house, she asked me if I wanted some of her cookbooks and to know Betty, you had to know that she definitely was not a cook. I had her “autograph” them for me and I am so happy I did. Her cooking fiasco’s are legendary and every time I look at the books I hear her voice starting to tell of another instance where Meta’s directions were not correct and that is why something went wrong!
- I love anything Gooseberry Patch! My stepmother has given me a few of these and when I find them at yard sales I snatch them up!
- Vintage advertising cookbooks and pamphlets – many would come as a premium when you bought the product and have cute graphics and interesting recipes
- Southern Living Cookbook Annuals -the yearly bound books of recipes from the magazines
- Old church fundraiser cookbooks – these usually have the best and easiest recipes that turn out delicious time after time
- Old cooking school cookbooks – they explain the science behind how ingredients work to make a dish turn out, usually have lists or diagrams of serving dishes and tableware, place settings, etc.
- And my favorite is Keith’s black binder…this is where he finds recipes he wants to try and prints them out and places them if they are keepers. It is also where he stores many of his own home made recipes. He is a wonderful cook and his recipes are the best!
Interesting, but you can tell that cookbooks and recipes carry a lot of memories and meaning for me. Cookbooks that my mom used, or that people gave me, or recipes that are made with love (like Keith’s) and dishes that every one wants again and again like those in the old church cookbooks are what I am drawn to when I collect. Reading old recipe books is entertaining and educational. It is exciting to find an old recipe that brings back a memory of good times eating good food with good people. And even more exciting when you make the recipe and the smell and taste cement those memories. Cooking is not just about feeding our bodies, it is about love, family, friends and good times.
