Today I am sharing memories of my childhood dinners.
- I remember liking Gerber Sweet Potatoes – I can even remember asking for them from time to time when I was in elementary school. Now, I am not really fond of sweet potatoes. They are ok, but not something that I ask for first.
- I remember eating big Sunday dinners at my Grannie’s. My Dad’s Mom would cook for all her children and their families, whoever happened to be there. I remember her pot roast the most. It just fell apart when it came out, nice and stringy and delicious. And I remember her always making biscuits from scratch. She would even let some of us grandkids help. And it seems like she always made Banana Pudding (not something I like) but everyone else loved it. My Dad had 5 brothers and 6 sisters. Now not everyone would be there every Sunday, but say you had about 8 siblings, some of them with spouses and kids and you realize how much work went into my Grannie’s Sunday dinners.
- I remember always having to eat my vegetables. Many of which I was not fond of, like Beets, Brussel Sprouts and Lima Beans. But I did like Corn, Carrots, Green Beans, Peas and I remember learning to like Broccoli and Cauliflower with my Dad. Those were favorites of his. And I remember my sister Becky HATING to eat her vegetables. I remember her sitting at the table until she fell asleep because she refused to eat something.
- I remember going out to eat was a big deal. We used to go to a place called Bonanza. It was a steak house where you placed your order and went through a line and picked out your extra items. I remember always getting a Chopped Steak (fancy for hamburger patty without a bun) and French Fries or a Baked Potato and wanting Chocolate Pudding or Jello for desert. The deserts were always served in glass dishes like you would see at old soda fountains with whipped cream and a cherry on the top. And we had to eat everything on our plate before we got desert.
- I also remember the first time we ate at Wendy’s. Oh wow! I fell in love with their Hamburgers (with those square patties) and Frosties! We had Milkshakes at McDonald’s and Burger King, but Frosties were the bomb! And they still are a nice treat every now and then today!
- I seem to remember when we were young we ate all of our meals together. It wasn’t until we were older that we started eating at different times, probably mainly due to our busy schedules with school, dance, cheerleading, band, swim team, etc.
- I remember Mom always made lumpy gravy. Sorry Mom, but I remember the complaints about lumps, even though I never liked gravy.
- I remember wonderful Thanksgiving dinners with all the fixings! And now that I have made a few of those myself, I am amazed that my Mom pulled it off without any help. Growing up, I don’t remember us kids helping her out. We usually watched the Macy’s parade and then Dad probably watched football. I remember sitting down and there would be so much food. And it was all delicious.
- I think the main thing that I remember is the fact that we never went hungry. I am thankful that my parents ensured we always had more than enough to eat and it makes me realize how important it is to support our local food banks and school programs that help ensure children at risk have food to eat. Thanks Mom and Dad!
