Last weekend and today we saw a brown thrasher on our deck. This bird is different from the others in our yard and I have only seen it once before and that was a couple of years ago.
Today and this weekend it has only been on the deck for maybe a minute or so and I have not been able to catch a shot of him. He is in the family of catbirds and mockingbirds and is about the same size, with an elongated tail feather compared to the cardinals and other birds that frequent our yard.
I found this vintage trade card with an image of the elusive bird. The image on the trade card is very accurate and closely resembles the bird on the deck. The only difference is the tail feather is very long, which the trade card does not really do justice.
From reading, the brown thrasher lives in hedges and nests close to the ground and is very protective of its nest. Also, they are supposed to be native to this area, yet I have not commonly seen them around. That is why it was exciting to see Mr. Thrasher today and this past weekend. Maybe he has found a new place to inhabit in our garden. And maybe I will be able to capture a picture to add to our group of garden friends.
