I have been sharing my Viking River Cruise experience with you and recently have been sharing pictures of the Cathedral in Cologne. I had to do so many posts because there were just too many images I wanted to share of this magnificent World Heritage Site!
The West Entrance is the Main Entrance. It has some of the more ornate decoration and is where the twin towers reside.
Now when we were there on this part of our guided tour, Easter Mass was going on and we were not allowed to go inside. And, the time of day when we arrived was not the best time to photograph the front of the church, so you will just have to bear with me on the bokeh effects and darkness of the façade.
You can see more reconstruction up on top of the tower on the North side.
One thing about being on a trip like this, you have to make the most of any opportunity for picture taking. The tours are structured with lots of things jammed into each day if you choose to participate in the guided tours. You can always strike out on your own, but we took full advantage of a native tour guide when we had the option.
They really were knowledgeable, friendly and fun. They were able to answer all questions asked, which was amazing. And they were always helpful in pointing out things we may want to see or try during free time.
And with the audiovox sets that Viking provides each passenger, you never have to worry about missing anything that your tour guide says. The little black boxes and ear pieces worked like a charm the entire trip.
I took a few pictures while we paused at the main door of the Arch above and all of the intricate carvings.
These doors are huge. I didn’t get any pictures with people in front of them that really show how massive in size they really are.
I love how there is just so much detail everywhere, from the lion-like door knockers to the angel on the door handle.
And of course, all of the statues and figurines representing the stories of the Bible. Like the Madonna and Christ Child.
And my favorite, Noah and the Ark.
Our guide shared with us how all of these religious icons would tell the history of the Bible and the Church.
With so many people not able to read, the figures were the perfect way to visualize the important stories and make it easy to communicate to the masses. I wish we had more time, but we did have a schedule, so we moved on to the North Side, which I will share next time.
