Yesterday I started telling you about our road trip to Pittsburgh to visit Keith’s Aunt Betty for her 90th Birthday celebration. And about how we were driving the day after Winter Storm Thor arrived.
We were on a smaller road on our way to US Rt. 19. Like this one in Canvas, West Virginia.
We were on this road for about 20 miles going through the mountains of West Virginia. And yes, the roads had been plowed here, but they were snow packed.
Along the way we even passed a few plows that were working, but they really could not get to the pavement, it was only in the upper teens.
But the scenery was amazing.
And there were a few other brave travelers out with us on our way, like this vehicle we followed the entire time.
Such pretty farmland.
And blue skies above.
In some places the trees were covered in snow, and others, like here, the trees had very little snow. Sometimes the scenery changed as you rounded the bend. There was still a lot of snow on the ground, just different amounts on the trees in different locations.
Finally we made it to US Rt. 19 and the roads were much better. And the view, what can I say?
Simply amazing. And here is a quick video of part of our drive on US Rt. 19.
It definitely gave you plenty to see and was not boring in the least.
See what I mean about the trees? These here in Gassaway were loaded with snow.
Everything was so white. And I 79 was in a lot better shape than I 64, thank goodness.

When the sun hit the mountains, they became blindingly bright.
It was just so beautiful!
Now when we got to Fairmont, West Virginia, things slowed down.
Quite a bit. Here you see Keith outside (it’s only 22) talking to a truck driver beside us. There is an accident six miles ahead of us on I 79 and we are stuck for a while.
So what does the passenger do after checking email, spending some quality time on Pinterest and Instagram? She gets out of the car and takes more pictures.
Our view was wonderful.
From what we read online, the wreck shut down both north and southbound lanes. Here is the southbound side.
And those are the next exits, southbound.
And this is what our poor car looked like. You couldn’t even read the license plate.
Remember I said we were six miles behind the accident? Well this is the view behind us. Some cars crossed the median and headed back to Fairmont. We thought about it a couple of times but were not really sure if we could figure out an alternative route. I am sure we could have, but we had plenty of gas, good cell phone coverage and had just eaten lunch a few miles back and still had snacks and drinks. And the car was warm enough without keeping it running to sit inside comfortably without a coat.
And this was the view ahead of us. We finally started seeing more traffic coming south, so we hoped that soon we would start moving.
And after three hours of sitting, yes that is correct, THREE HOURS stuck in traffic behind an accident on I 79 outside of Fairmont, West Virginia, traffic finally started moving. But I quickly snapped a few more pictures before we said goodbye to West Virginia.
It was pretty, Winter Storm Thor! I wish we hadn’t been stuck for so long in traffic, but we enjoyed our road trip nonetheless. And I am so glad that I took pictures to document our experience. Do you take road trip pictures from the car?
