After sailing through Oberwesel and viewing Shoenburg Castle on my Viking River Cruise our next little village along the Rhine would be a tiny one named Kaub.
We were still in an area where there were lots of terraced hillsides along the banks of the Rhine.
And there were still some heavily wooded areas.
And there was a cemetery on the base of a hill right before we got to Kaub. They had a War Memorial with three large crosses that was visible from the deck of our ship.
There were 48 graves for World War I & II soldiers that were buried there.
And we came across another tunnel into the hillside. But this was not a train tunnel built to look like a castle. This may have been a tunnel to one of the old slate mines in the area. That was an industry that Kaub was known for before they shut them down. And you can see that the hill above the tunnel looks like it would be full of slate.
Now the village is known for winemaking and tourism. As you can see below, it has a castle. Actually it has two castles: Castle Gutenfels, shown below and Castle Pfalzgrafenstein. I will share them in an upcoming post.
It also has its Ship’s Mast along the bank of the Rhine. And charming old buildings in its town center. And there is a statue to Prussian Field Marshall Blucher, know as General Forwards. It was here in Kaub that he crossed the Rhine towards Belgium where Napoleon was ultimately defeated at the Battle of Waterloo.
There are also some nice villas on the hill above the village. Just look at the garden area of the one on the left below.
It must be a beauty to see up close. I am not sure what that building was: maybe a hotel or maybe just a large vacation home. And there was a little chalet style building right beside it.
And beside both of them was the local YMCA. Very fancy! It seems this Y is a place to hold meetings and it offers lodging. What a beautiful place to hold a meeting! It must have a fantastic view. And apparently in Germany, CVJM is YMCA.
And of course, I got a picture of the km marker – number 546!
But back to those two castles I mentioned…Burg Gutenfels is coming up next!
Check back next week to see more of Gutenfels and Pfalzgrafenstein.
