Last year on our visits to Williamsburg we became enamored with their Bird Bottles. When we were there at Christmas we bought our very own. Well, Saturday we put ours up for the season!
These bottles are all over Colonial Williamsburg. The colonists welcomed having martins and other small insect eating birds nest under the eaves of their houses to help control the summertime insect population in a climate with hot, humid summers…think mosquito relief!
The best place for these red clay glazed bottles is under an eave in a protected area. We put ours on the front corner of our house. We will be able to watch any nesters when they come. And we hope they will come. Keith even added the perfect little twig for a place for them to perch. Which the bottles are designed to have a twig anyway…in Williamsburg they hang little flags and buntings from the twigs, but Keith wouldn’t let me go that far.
I just love our Bird Bottle. We will let you know if someone decides to take up residence.

how do you hang it to the wall?

Hi, Marilyn. The bottom of the bottle, or what is the back against the wall, has an opening to hook onto a holder. My husband used a very large nail to hang it on. We have had multiple families every season.
