Ok, so I have shared the South Entrance and the West Entrance of the Cologne Cathedral, or Dom, with you already. Now, here are a few pictures of the North Entrance.
There was a lot of reconstruction going on here on the North Side of the Cathedral when we visited. Lots of scaffolding and blocked off areas.
Where there was a garden on the South Side, there was a lovely fountain on this side.
Here you can see how the pollution and elements have really taken their toll on the sandstone.
And here is a shot of one of the towers from this side. Amazing.
And, when you turn to go down the steps from the Cathedral you end up right by the train station. It is amazing the mix of old and new architecture that is side by side here in Cologne. And, can you see all those bikes? Amsterdam was not the only place where everyone rode bikes. They rode bikes here, too.
Another interesting building was the WDR or German Broadcasting Station. Part of the building was older looking with little windows jutting out in several places and part of it looked like any other modern day office building.
One of my favorites was the Dom Hotel.
I fell in love with the trim above this balcony.
Isn’t’ it just amazing?
In fact, all around the Cathedral was a shopping district with restaurants and shops in new and old buildings. Here is another interesting building with a beautiful curved corner covered in balconies.
The Fruh Brewhaus featured an image of St. Peter, who is the patron Saint of the Cathedral.
You never know where you will find something hidden on one of these old buildings. You really have to look to see all of the details.
By now we were across the square again with our tour guide and it was time to move on. But we did come back to the Cathedral during our free time after Easter Mass and toured the inside. More on the beautiful stained glass later!
