Last Thursday Winter Storm Thor visited the east coast. Last Friday, we took a little road trip to Pittsburgh to wish our Aunt Betty a happy 90th Birthday. And along the way we enjoyed the beauty of Thor.
Since I was the passenger, I decided the best thing I could do would be to take pictures of the winter wonderland all around us. Like here in Fincastle, Virginia.
After all, Keith needed to pay attention. The roads in Virginia were mostly plowed, but it was so cold we had to watch for black ice. When we left it was in the low teens.
But the sun was shining and it really was beautiful.
Now most of these pictures are taken with my phone, through windows in the car, moving at high speeds and did I mention through the windows? Which were often spotted with spray from passing vehicles?
So, they aren’t perfectly composed, but they record the story perfectly. This was taken in Eagle Rock, Virginia.
And here we are along the James River outside of Clifton Forge, Virginia.
On US Rt. 220.
The rock cliffs there were amazing.
It’s amazing how some of these turned out. Some have reflections from inside the car.
At home we had gotten a couple of inches of snow. Here they had gotten quite a bit more.
And really, the roads were not that bad.
But now it was time to get on I 64 and head west to West Virginia.
This area of Allegheny County is beautiful at any time of the year, but today Covington looked magnificent.
A beautiful winter landscape. And as you can see, the roads were great. That all changed the minute we hit the West Virginia state line. Literally. It was a solid sheet of packed snow and ice. It looked like they had not been touched. So, I stopped taking pictures for a bit, it was a little intense.
We stopped at a rest station in White Sulphur Springs. This is where the Greenbrier Resort is. What a view.
See the condition of the parking lot? That’s what the interstate looked like, too.
Here is Keith, he was a great driver that morning!
One last view of the Greenbrier Valley.
The ice was another beautiful thing to see. The water dripping from the rock cliffs created amazing ice formations and huge icicles.
These were taken in Asbury, West Virginia.

By now we are on a little road that will connect us to US Rt.19. This was a beautiful drive through the country.
There were lots of beautiful barns.
And lots of horses and cows. But let me stop for now and save the rest for tomorrow. Stay tuned.
